ABSENCES

It is the shared responsibility of the school and the home to assist students to develop desirable habits of punctuality and attendance. Students are expected to attend regularly in compliance with the law for compulsory attendance. Abscences are sometimes necessary due to illness, death in the family, a doctor or dental appointment, or whenever the Principal considers that exemption from attendance is in the best interest of the pupil. Such absences must be recorded in the legal attendance records. Principals are authorized to require satisfactory explanation from the legal custodial parent or guardian for the absence of a pupil from all or any part of the school day.

Absences: In order to insure the safety of our students, parents are asked to call the school office by 9:00 a.m. to report their child's absence from school. A written excuse, signed by the parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence is required upon the child's return to school. Parents are responsible for arranging to get their child's assignments when the child is absent from school. If students are absent longer than 3 days, a doctor's excuse may be necessary.

Make-up of School Work Due to Absences: All class work missed due to unexcused/planned absences or extended vacations must be made up upon returning. The following plan ratio will be used:

1 day absent..........1 day to get work completed and in to teacher(s).
2 days absent........2 days to get work completed and in to teacher(s).
3 days or more......1 day allowed for each day missed to a max. of 7 days.

PLEASE NOTE - Excused absences (Gr. 1-8 only) - The teachers will work with parents to help any student keep up to date in his/her school work while s/he is home recuperating. Early/Extended Vacations - School work is to be made up AFTER the student returns to school, using the above ratio

RELEASING OF STUDENTS

A student must present a written request from parents to the Principal if he or she needs permission for an early dismissal. Since success in school is dependent on regular attendance, it is recommended that appointments with doctors and dentists be made after school hours or on "off days" whenever possible.

Absence of students from school for reasons other than illness, funerals or medical appointments, must be seriously considered. A request should be made to the Principal. The Principal and teachers will discuss the student's progress and advise the parents of the effect that the absence will have on the child's schoolwork. The final decision is the responsiblity of the parents. Full attendance is required of all students by state law. Parents should make every effort to plan vacations around the school calendar.

ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS

You will be contacted if your child gets sick or is hurt at school. This is why Emergency Cards are so important to us; if parents cannot be reached, we need to have another person to contact who will care for your child.

We will call the Mequon-Thiensville Rescue Squad if the accident or illness is serious. Parents will then be contacted for further instructions.

ADMISSION POLICY

Serving the needs of the parish child is the primary consideration for admission to Lumen Christi Catholic School. The following statements will serve as factors to be considered by the School Principal and Admissions Committee in admitting students to the school.

School family: A family who currently has children in the school or has family members who have graduated from the school.

An active member of the parish is defined as one parent or guardian who is a practicing Catholic; participates in the worshiping community; is a registered member of Lumen Christi Parish; and contributes to the time, talent, and treasure aspects of the parish.

The tenure of the parishioner.

As a general practice, the school is unable to accommodate any Educational Exceptional Needs (EEN) students. Any exceptions will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

In order to meet the educational needs of Lumen Christi students, the school follows the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Policy #5110 that states that all new students are on probation for one semester.

Lumen Christi School admits students regardless of race, color, and national or ethnic origin.

Junior Kindergarten (JRK) is an optional self-supporting program not subsidized by the parish. Any school/parish family that chooses not to enroll their younger children in the JRK program will not be penalized for entrance purposes at the SRK level. JRK registrants are subject to this Admissions Policy.

All children applying for JRK through 1st grade registration in the school must be screened by the Principal or his/her designee prior to review by the Admissions Committee in order to determine if their educational needs can be met through the school program.

Applications for registration by parishioner children who satisfy all the criteria for admission listed above are subject to review by the Admissions Committee when the grade(s) being applied for are approaching the level(s) where additional staffing is a consideration in accordance with the Growth Control Guidelines adopted 12/12/91.

Students in grades 2 through 8 must provide records from their former school(s) before they will be considered for admission. This is the responsibility of the family seeking admission. These students must also meet eligibility requirements as stated previously.

As a general policy, students will not be admitted into sixth, seventh, or eighth grades. Exceptions may be made to include students whose families have recently moved into and joined either parish, have had Catholic schooling or have children already enrolled in the school. Cases will be reviewed individually by the Admissions Committee to determine the eligibility of these students.

Probationary status as stated on Application Form.

Non-parishioners of Lumen Christi Parish can be admitted to the school with the following understandings:

  1. Tuition will equal the full cost of the child's education.
  2. Space is available in a class after parishioners are admitted.
  3. The child will participate in religion classes, liturgies, and school activities associated with religious themes and/or Christian service.
  4. All non-parishioner applications for admission are subject to review and approval by the Admissions Committee.

All non-parish applications for registration must be received before May 31 after which they will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and notifications provided by July 1.

Children of staff members will be regarded as parishioners for admission purposes.

Determination of admission will normally be made by the Admissions Committee. If that decision is unsatisfactory to the parents, a final appeal may be made to the Governance Corporate Board.

In all cases where class size limits have been reached, a child will be placed on a waiting list until such time as openings occur. The waiting list order will be established by the School Admissions Committee according to the factors stated previously.

Readmission to the school will be based on whether a family has continued to participate in parish activities and all the other above listed factors.

Should the need arise for the Admissions Committee to "Wait List" a parish member(s)' child(ren) because of class(es) being filled, the Admissions Committee will notify in writing the School Commission and School Commission Chairman immediately. The Admissions Committee chairman will report back to the School Commission at the next regular meeting. A "Wait List", should one exist, shall be reported on a monthly basis at the School Commission meetings.

APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION

Application for registration for all grades is held during Catholic Schools Week. Dates will be announced in the church bulletins and via a letter home from the school office. Kindergarten registration usually coincides with or is just prior to the public school registration. All Junior Kindergarten students must be screened before admission to our school. Parish families that have used the Junior Kindergarten program only, will be considered a new enrollment to the school. Parishioner families without an enrollment history will be given a higher priority.
